Most Americans believe that men are healthier than women. Boys learn this growing up. It isn’t surprising then, that as adults most men describe their health as “excellent.” The problem is, these beliefs are false. American men, on average, die more than five years younger than women. Men have higher death rates for all 15 leading causes of death, except Alzheimer’s disease. For the top two killers — heart disease and cancer — one and a half times more men than women die. Twice as many men die from unintentional injuries. Why are men’s risks so high?
